Jane Austen Book Cover for Publizm
Reimagining a Literary Classic for a Contemporary Audience
Project Objective:
This project involved designing a digital cover for Northanger Abbey by Jane Austen, created as part of my first publishing collaboration in Norway. The objective was to develop a visual interpretation that respected the original novel while making it feel relevant and engaging for today’s readers.
The process began with research into the book’s themes, characters, and narrative tone. Rather than relying on traditional period-inspired cover design, I explored how the story’s humor, imagination, and self-awareness could be translated into a more contemporary visual language. Three distinct creative directions were developed, each approaching the novel from a different perspective.
The concepts ranged from collage-based storytelling inspired by the protagonist’s imagination, to a more illustrative approach aimed at readers within the young adult and crossover fiction market. The final selected direction combined photography, digital manipulation, illustration, and AI-assisted image generation to create a playful and visually striking composition that captured both the wit and atmosphere of the novel.
The project highlights a concept-driven approach to book cover design, where research, storytelling, and visual experimentation work together to create a strong first impression while remaining faithful to the spirit of the source material.
